Losing Weight Tips for 2012

Hello and Happy New Year to you! It’s the time of the year again when we reflect on our past and make plans for the New Year. Have you achieved all your goals for 2011? Perhaps, you have hit some and missed some. Was losing weight one of your goals for the past year? Do not feel bad if you failed to achieve your weight loss goal. It’s not the end of the world. You can always start afresh in 2012.

It is not uncommon to put on extra pounds over the holiday season. Now that the feasting is over, it’s time to get down to some serious work to shed those unwanted pounds. Choose to lose weight naturally instead of going on a crash diet, which is not sustainable. Besides, it makes you feel deprived and miserable.

Tips for Losing Weight

You have decided that you must get back in shape before it gets out of hand. Congratulations! You have just made an important decision. Recognizing a problem is the first step to solving the issue. Here are 5 useful losing weight tips that will help to regain a slimmer you.

Tip #1: Set your weight loss goal

Before you start pounding on the treadmill, set your weight loss goal first. Be clear about what you want to achieve – how much weight do you want to lose? How soon do you want to lose your weight? You’ve got to set realistic and achievable goals to help you stay motivated. It helps to keep you on course and not bail out prematurely when you don’t see the results.

Just as you did not pile on the extra pounds overnight, do not expect to lose them overnight either. A healthy rate of weight loss would be 3 – 5 pounds (1.3 – 2.2kg) in the first week and 1 – 2 pounds (0.4 – 0.9kg) each week thereafter.

Tip #2: Set your weight loss plan and adhere to it

Having set your weight loss goal, you need a plan to get there. Regardless if it’s a diet or exercise plan, the key here is to keep to it. Be determined about your weight loss goal, persevere and see it through.

Personally, I prefer a combination of a diet change and an exercise plan. Instead of starving yourself to lose weight, a better option would be to eat wisely by making the right food choices. Learn more about the food for weight loss or juicing diet. Both are recommended solutions to healthy weight loss.

Tip #3: Measure your body-fat

Body weight is commonly used as a gauge for success in weight loss. However, measuring your body-fat percentage is equally important. You could be slimming down due to loss of water in your body and not fats. Body-fat percentage can be easily measured with a body-fat scale. My personal preference is the EatSmart Precision GetFit Digital Body Fat Scale. Ease of use, sleek design and affordability are some of the reasons for my recommendation.

Besides body weight and body-fat percentage, the EatSmart Precision GetFit Digital Body Fat Scale also measures body water, muscle mass and bone mass. Awareness of your body-fat percentage aids you to eat healthily and motivates you to exercise regularly.

Tip #4: Get rid of obstacles and temptations

Identify the obstacles to your success in weight loss. List them down and decide how you can overcome them. For instance, if snacking is a habit you find hard to kick, simply opt for healthy snacks instead. Fresh fruits, vegetables and unsalted nuts are some of the options.

Clear your refrigerator of unhealthy junk foods like carbonated sugar drinks, chocolates, biscuits and chips. Refrain from buying foods that you can’t resist eating. Avoid the confectionery section in the supermarket.

Tip #5: Encourage and motivate yourself

Keeping a weight loss journal serves as a good form of encouragement to yourself. Write down your weight loss goal at the beginning; jot down the weekly progress and pat yourself on the shoulder with each milestone achieved. Take before and after pictures. This can be very powerful, especially if you are a visual person.

Put images of your ideal body in your room, work desk or even as your computer wallpaper. The whole idea is to remind and motivate yourself as you constantly get exposed to the positive images.

Having losing weight tips won’t help if you just sit on them. Put the tips for losing weight into action, get your butt off the couch and start exercising. Resolve to eat healthy, fat-burning foods and kick start your healthy lifestyle in 2012.

If you have not been exercising for a long time, start with walking first and gradually increase the intensity. You can get more tips and advice on walking at www.medicinenet.com/walking/article.htm
